The innovative Tenaris stainless steel for high-efficiency power plants certified by TÜV
Completed the TÜV qualification phase of TEMPALOY AA-1 stainless steel at the end of 2009, Tenaris is now waiting for the official certification scheduled for April 2010.

Completed the TÜV qualification of TEMPALOY AA-1 stainless steel, Tenaris is now waiting for the official certification

It took nine months to qualify Tenaris TEMPALOY AA-1, an austenitic stainless steel developed by Japanese mill TenarisNKKtubes to be used in boilers, specifically for the manufacturing of super-heaters and re-heaters for coal-fired power plants. The team involved in the qualification process had quite exacting months during which have been performed several deepening characterization tests of the mechanical and qualitative features, both on the raw material and the welded one. The particular TEMPALOY AA-1 chemical composition makes a very high creep and corrosion resistant steel. This is a basic characteristic for its use in ultra super critical boilers where the steam temperatures may exceed 650°C. “The oncoming of TEMPALOY AA-1”, explains Paola Mariani, Tenaris Product Development for Power Gen, “enriches Tenaris package for Power Generation, completing the different ranges and grades of the tubular products offer in order to fulfil the demand of various arrangements and uses in next generation power plants”.

“Being certified by TÜV InterCert GROUP, the German independent Certification Body for system and product, means for Tenaris the opportunity to start commercial activities with the European market, especially the German one, where this mark is usually required”, adds Giuseppe Cumino, Product Leader for Tenaris Power Gen.

TÜV certification adds to the recognitions given by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) during the year 2009.

Currently, TenarisNKKTubes, the mill that worked at the development of the innovative material, and the company Sanyo Special Steel Co. Ltd., manufactures of tubular products for Tenaris, are in their qualification phase by Alstom Stuttgart as official suppliers of this product. Furthermore, Sanyo has developed a special sand-blast treatment inside the tubes, a technology that strengthens the steam oxidation resistance.
